A roller or sectional garage door is the right choice. Both open vertically with no outward swing, so you can park right up to the opening and still get the door up. An up and over door swings outward as it rises and needs around 1.5m of clear driveway in front of it. In most cases, yes. Up and over retractable doors can take a standard boom-type electric operator. Canopy-type up and over doors need a bow arm converter fitted to the back of the panel, which simulates the twisting action the canopy mechanism requires. Sectional doors are straightforward – a boom operator above the door handles them easily. One important caveat: an electric opener is not a fix for a door that is already hard to open. The door must be properly balanced before automation is added, or the safety mechanisms will not work correctly and the motor will not last. We will confirm the expected timeline when you order and keep you updated if anything changes.

Most standard residential garage door installations take between two and four hours, including removal of your old door. Larger or more complex jobs – double garages, non-standard openings, or work requiring brickwork – may take a full day. We give you a realistic timeframe when we quote, and we take the old door away unless you ask us to leave it.

The most common single garage door width is 7 feet (2134mm), though this can feel tight for modern cars – we recommend aiming for at least 7 feet wide and 7 feet high if your opening allows it. The standard double garage door width is 14 to 16 feet. Roller and sectional doors give more flexibility because they fit inside the garage opening and rise vertically, so small variations in the opening size are easier to accommodate. There are good options for low-headroom garages across all door types. Roller doors typically need around 300mm of headroom above the opening – less than this is possible but involves a compromise on slat thickness, strength, and insulation. Sectional doors have low-headroom track configurations available from most manufacturers. The main constraint with electric openers is the length of the boom arm, which needs clearance above the door when it is half-open. We measure headroom as part of every site survey and will tell you exactly what fits and what does not before anything is ordered.

Our installations are guaranteed for a minimum of five years. Note that most manufacturer warranties require an annual service to remain valid – we offer a service plan and ad-hoc servicing to cover this.
