What Is an Up and Over Door?

An up and over door is a single panel that tilts upward and outward as it opens. It runs on a simple, robust spring-loaded mechanism, it’s easy to use every day, and it suits most standard integral garages. The one thing to plan for is driveway space. Because the door swings outward as it rises, you need around 1.5m of clear drive in front of it.

Up and Over Garage Doors Across Bristol

Up and over doors suit Bristol’s large stock of postwar semis and detached homes, particularly in Brislington, Knowle, Kingswood and Staple Hill, where standard integral openings are common. If you’re replacing an older door, the choice of standard sizes and panel designs usually makes a like-for-like swap simple.

We’re an approved installer for Garador, whose UK-made steel up and over doors are one of its strengths, and Cardale, a UK brand with a long track record in residential garage doors. We also supply and maintain Henderson doors. GRP (glass reinforced polyester) is a low-maintenance option, and we can colour-match most doors to a RAL reference.

Canopy or Retractable?

There are two mechanisms. A canopy door is the most economical option and suits manual or basic electric operation. A retractable door runs back into the garage on horizontal tracks, giving full internal clearance, and it’s the better choice if you want automation.

Converting an Up and Over Door to Electric

Both types can be electrified, including the door you already have. Retractable doors take a straightforward boom-type operator. Canopy doors use a bow arm converter, which fits to the back of the panel so the motor can drive the canopy’s twisting action all the way up and down. The operators we fit run smoothly and quietly with soft-start and soft-stop, and a remote opens the door without you leaving the car.

How an Up and Over Door Is Fitted

The door is mounted to a timber or steel frame fixed to the brickwork, with the spring-loaded mechanism fitted either behind or within the structural opening. The whole job is done by our own engineers. Your old door leaves with us unless you’d like it kept, and if the opening has to be widened, the lintel raised or a new sub-frame fitted, we do that building work ourselves.

Most doors we supply come with the manufacturer’s full 10-year guarantee, and we guarantee the installation itself for at least five years. To keep the manufacturer’s warranty valid, book an annual service through our service plan or as a one-off visit.
